Know your options

Life Insurance

Life insurance assures payment of an amount to the person you name on the happening of the insured event — at maturity, at specified periodic dates, or on an unfortunate earlier death. It replaces uncertainty with certainty, coming to a family's aid when they lose their main source of income. Term life is affordable and straightforward, protecting you for a set period (e.g. while raising a family or paying off debt) and is usually the cheapest option. Universal life lets you adjust your premium payments and death benefit as your cash flow changes. Whole life covers you for the rest of your life at a fixed premium, with a guaranteed minimum rate of return, guaranteed premiums, and a guaranteed death benefit.

Critical Illness Insurance

Covers a range of illnesses and conditions — heart attack, heart surgery, cancer, blindness, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson's, paralysis, transplant, Alzheimer's and severe burns, among others (coverage varies by insurer). The lump-sum benefit is paid regardless of any other insurance you hold, and can reduce your financial burden (paying off debts or keeping a business running), help you maintain independence (modifying your home or vehicle, hiring domestic help), access treatment not covered by provincial health plans, and simply give you room to focus on recovery.

Disability Insurance

Replaces a portion of your income if you become unable to work due to an injury, serious illness or mental health issue, for either a short or long duration. Coverage includes individual and group insurance plans, as well as government plans such as workers' compensation and Canada Pension Plan benefits.

Drug & Dental Plan

Covers costs Manitoba's government health plan doesn't — dental care, eye care, prescription drugs, semi-private or private hospital rooms, medical travel, and more. Without a group plan, these expenses (and a serious illness) can put real strain on your finances; an individual plan gives peace of mind and a safety net against day-to-day medical and dental costs.
